Joplin is located in Jasper County and is rumored to be named after famous ragtime pianist and composer Scott Joplin. However, it is actually named after Revered Harris Joplin, the founder of the first Methodist congregation. Joplin is the largest city in the county with an estimated population of about 50,000 residents and over 170,000 residents in the metropolitan areas. Much of Joplin’s economic development depends on the two major hospitals in the area, St. John’s Regional Medical Center and Freeman Hospital and Health System.

Joplin has a wide mixture of both residential and commercial areas. Much of Joplin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently revitalizing the Main street downtown. Aside from rejuvenating the downtown area, Joplin has many beautiful parks and golf courses such as the Twin Hills Country Club and the Schifferdecker Golf Course as well as many community and neighborhood parks. Joplin is predominately the main destination for most people and conveniently has several highways for people to use including Interstate 44 and Highway 71.
